Dear Families

By now you have probably learned that classes will be shifting to virtual learning next week. I want to start by acknowledging what a scary and stressful situation this is for so many of us. Personally it feels a little like déjà vous of March 2020 all over again. Please know that I am here to support in whatever ways I can.

Preparing for Science Class

In order to provide some sense of normalcy for the kiddos, I’m hoping to run a fun, hands-on, and educational class with my students this week. As much as possible I’m hoping it will be a class like any other except that it is on Zoom instead of in person.

Hopefully you have heard from your kids that we have spent our last few lessons learning about the science behind COVID-19 and vaccines (You can see the whole unit I am teaching at https://haywardscience.com/vaccines/). This week we will be digging into how vaccines can protect not just individuals, but whole communities through a process called herd immunity. In order to help students understand this concept we will be doing an activity using dominos and tape. I’m hoping that families have kept their science kits from last year, and will help kids prepare for class by finding the tape and dominos that should be in bag #2.

If you no longer have access to the science kits, I will be with other staff at Lorin Eden tomorrow helping to pass out additional materials from 3:00-5:00 PM. The k-2 pick up will be from 3:00-4:00 PM and the 3-6 pick up will be from 4:00-5:00 PM. In addition to the dominos and tape, I will be providing 6th grade students in Room 15 with a quarter teaspoon of quinoa. I will also have paper copies of worksheets that I will be handing out. (If you already have the dominos and tape and are not able to make it to school tomorrow you can print out those worksheets for your kids here).

If you do pick up any materials tomorrow, consider bringing your child with you, as there will be a pediatric vaccine clinic being held on site!

Schedule

To prevent confusion, I will be asking teachers to allow me to co-host the meetings that they are already using with their class. So kids can use the same link for science as they are using with their classroom teacher.

Below is the tentative schedule for science next week by classroom teacher.
